Peking University Overview
Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history. Peking University now consists of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, and Information and Engineering. The University has 53 colleges and departments, and offers 120 undergraduate programs, 242 graduate programs, and 212 doctoral programs. While still emphasizing fundamental sciences, the university has paid special attention to the development of applied sciences. In October 2013, there were 14116 undergraduate students, 13665 postgraduate students and 8134 doctoral candidates. There were also approximately 3574 long-term international students from 116 different countries enrolled in various programs on campus; among whom 2540 were Degree-Seeking students.
Peking University is also known for outstanding research facilities and highly qualified teachers and researchers with extensive research interests and in-depth knowledge. Today the University has 6441 full-time faculties, of whom 1,701 are professors and 2,037 are associate professors, along with 63 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. At present, Peking University has 11 national key laboratories, 86 state key laboratories, 2 national engineering research centers and 8 affiliated hospitals and health centers.
The Peking University library is the largest university library in Asia, with a collection of 9.0195 million books, as well as Chinese and foreign journals and newspapers. The library also serves as a comprehensive modern information center.

The 110 faculty and teaching and research staff at our college are renowned both at home and abroad in their individual fields. Most of the faculty has overseas experience, working or studying in leading universities prior to joining the College of Engineering. They are conducting cutting-edge research in fields ranging from physical sciences and energy to public health and industrial management.

Reestablished in 2005, the College of Engineering currently incorporates six departments: the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics , Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Energy & Resources Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering & Management, and the Department of Mechanics & Engineering Science. Six undergraduate programs, three master programs and 11 Ph.D. programs have been set up in order to cultivate the next generation of leaders in engineering practice, research and education

Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Students with bachelor’s degree pursuing PhD degree in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies, their study period at Peking University is normally 5 years. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.
Application
Applicants for Ph.D. Program must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, have attained a master's degree. Students with bachelor’s degree could apply for PhD program in subjects of sciences or continuous program that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Application materials:
- Peking University Application Form for International Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph fixed. Please visit http://www.studyatpku.com, fill in the application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for reference.
- Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date), must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
- Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
- A personal statement (1500 words for doctorate program in English).
- Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English.
- A copy of your TOEFL results: Students who do not speak English as the first language must have taken the TOEFL with a score of over 90, unless they have received a bachelor’s degree from an English speaking university.
- One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).
- Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field.
Note: Two copies of all application materials are required, one original and one duplicate. Please hand in personally or sent them by post to International Students Division of Peking University (The envelope must be marked “Application for Graduate Admission”).
Application Fee: 800 RMB, paid in cash, by Yinlian bank card or through online payment. Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted.

Visa information
Students admitted to PKU may apply for your visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your country with your letter of admission and JW201/202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain “X” Visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after your arrival in China. You must come to the International Students Division and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.
Full Scholarship for all Ph.D. Candidates
Chinese Government Scholarship will provide:
- Registration and tuition fees;
- Basic learning materials every semester;
- Accommodation (Single Room) at Zhongguanyuan Global Village at Peking University;
- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Program;
- Generous living allowance;
- Settlement subsidy after registration.
